When it comes to modern technology, the options and benefits are almost endless, but let’s not forget that technology is meant to be an aid to us and not an obstacle and distraction.
Recently my thoughts took me back to an evening, where I came to realize a foolish mistake I had made. After dinner that evening my wife and I made our way to the living room to talk, cuddle and channel surf for a while. The thing I recall the most was when she got up and made her way back to the kitchen to clean up. I can see it so clearly now. There I sat on the couch, TV blaring, laptop on my lap, and to my left side on the couch arm rest was my cell phone. Sad to say that to my right side of the couch was an empty spot where my wife once was. She was gone!
Aside from God, she is unquestionably the most important person in my life. How could I allow myself to get distracted by the hypnotic power of technology? This scenario is all too common. Entire families sitting together, but rather than enjoying the company of each other, everyone is in their own world distracted by an electronic device of some kind.
I challenge you to observe the number of people who make genuine eye contact with you during a normal conversation, without being distracted by their electronic devices. I see this very often. It shows to me that the person I’m attempting to communicate with does not find what I have to say important enough to simply give me the proper respect and eye contact that I deserve.
Here are three tips that can help.
-
MAKE EYE CONTACT
During a conversation look directly at the person talking to you and listen to what they are saying. When we make eye contact and use facial expressions, subconsciously we communicate to others that what they are sharing is meaningful and important to us. Try not to change the subject, get distracted by your surroundings, or answer texts or calls during this time.
-
SCHEDULE TIME
Try to schedule time from your busy day to spend quality time with loved ones. It doesn’t need to cost money. You can play a board game together or just talk. Make sure the conversation is about what the other person wants to talk about. Keep your focus on what they are saying. This will make them feel valued. Whatever you decide to do with that quality time, leave the TV and other devices out of it.
-
DINNER TOGETHER
Make it a habit to eat dinner together at the dinner table. You’ll be surprised how many conversations flare up, or the memories you will make. Don’t worry, you will still have plenty of time in your day to enjoy all your favorite electronic gadgets!
My prayer for us is that we take a moment to think about the people we may be neglecting and that we make the decision to better ourselves in this area of our lives.
