What goes through your mind when you think of surrendering?  Maybe a white flag, or someone with their hands raised up as they are giving in.  Dictionary.com describes the word surrender as to give oneself up, as into the power of another; submit or yield.

knees to the earth

THE FACT:  In our culture surrendering most definitely carries a negative vibe.  It insinuates loss, failure or to give up control.  If we think about it, what team wants to surrender to its opponent?  What army wants to lose a war?  Although both of these examples would be good reasons why to not surrender, my point is that, it is in our human nature to not give in.

THE RESULT:  We have been taught all of our lives to “never give in” or “never let anyone tell you it can’t be done”.  In fact, it is written all over our culture in company slogans like Burger King’s “Have It Your Way”.  Nike’s “Just Do It”.  And AMX’s “It’s Your World. Take Control”.  Our culture simply teaches us to never give in to the power of someone else.

GOD’S PERSPECTIVE:  On the flip side, in our relationship with God surrendering is so necessary to be able to see God’s plan for our lives.  (Never easy, but extremely necessary).

When we give God our life, dreams, desires, and plans, we allow Him to use them for His purposes.  We all long for purpose and want to fulfill our life’s destiny, but the harsh reality is that if we don’t truly surrender to God we may never see His full plan, and experience all He really has for us.  Jeremiah 29:11 says, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

THE KEY TO SURRENDERING IS AN INTIMATE RELATIONSHIP WITH JESUS:  I find myself taking back the steering wheel at times, but my intimate relationship with Jesus helps me to humbly surrender again.  My friend, don’t settle for anything less than God’s best for your life.  Even when the work God is doing in you goes against your will.

THE FIRST STEP TO SURRENDERING

1.  Admit you are a sinner ask God’s forgivenessRomans 3:23 says, “Everyone has sinned and is far away from God’s saving presence”.  Romans 10:13 says, “As the scripture says, Everyone who calls out to the Lord for help will be saved.”

2.  Believe in Jesus.  John 3:16 says, “Yes, God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him would not be lost but have eternal life”.

3.  Confess that Jesus is your Lord.  Romans 10:9 says, “If you openly say, Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from death, you will be saved”.

My prayer is that you take some time to meditate on where your life is right now and decide to make Jesus the Lord of your life.

I thought about “Have Your Way by Deitrick Haddon”

    1. Tiwana, thanks for sharing “Have Your Way by Deitrick Haddon”, I really liked watching the video. If you know of any other good songs/videos, please share. I also check out your site recently and love the changes you’ve made. Have a great weekend!

  2. Great post! I love how you broke the message down into easy, simple steps! Yes, surrendering to God is so simple, yet, we can complicate things through our need for self-control, which sometimes results in extended suffering. It was nice to be reminded that surrendering to God is really the best option (sometimes I need this reminder on the daily…ha ha).

    1. Candee Torrez, your so right! I also have to be reminded of this often. Surrendering to God seems to be a decision I liberally have to make daily. Like you said, “We can complicate things through our need for self-control”. Your comment hit home! Thank you.

  3. Wow! I love your post! Indeed, it is only through surrender that we can experience the great plans God has for our lives. We are God’s children. God expects us to be like Christlike. Jesus said, “If someone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other cheek also. And if any man sues you in court and takes away your coat, let him also have your cape. And if someone asks you to go with him a mile, go with him two miles” (Matthew 5: 39-41). None of these things are easy to do, but when we do them we are surely empowered spiritually. I have also noticed that humbleness disarms the aggressor (the person who is hurting us). I love the work you are doing. Thanks for sharing your insights.

    1. JC Witness Owl, your vast knowledge and insight is most appreciated. Humbleness is definitely something we all need. That may just be an idea for a future post. Thank you for sharing.
